We’re excited to announce the Sixth Annual Taos Turkey Trot in beautiful Taos, New Mexico.
Online registration will open June 1st. We can’t wait to see the Taos community and our visitors shaking a tail feather on Saturday, November 18, 2017.
We are very much encouraging costumes (race safe) and will be rewarding prizes for best costume in two categories – “best turkey” and “best not-turkey”.
Turkey Trot is all about getting out there and having fun and promoting an active, healthy lifestyle for people of all ages.
There are many ways to get involved, as a runner, as a volunteer, as a sponsor or just by sharing our posts with your network. If you are interested in helping out on race day, or by becoming a sponsor please contact us!
Registration is open for this year’s Taos Turkey Trot 5k Road Race and Fun Run/Walk!
What’s new this year?
This year, you can register individually or as a team for either the timed 5k Road Race or the 5k Community Fun Run/Walk. We’ve split start times for the serious runners and the let’s-have-fun participants. The timed 5K Road Race will kick off at 9:30am with 5K Community Fun Run/Walk participants starting at 9:35.
We’ve also added a KidsK (3K – start time 10:45am). Every participant in the KidsK 3k will receive a special award for participating.
This year we have partnered with Twirl Toystore and Play Space to bring the Turkey Trot Crafts Area to our families from 9:00am to 11:30am. Sponsored and run by our favorite toy store, Twirl Toy Store and Play Space. Twirl’s team leaders will help crafters imagine and create awards for the youth runners in the KidsK! Kids can craft all morning and then run, or just do one or the other. The craft activity is FREE!
The Running Weatherman says it’s going to be a cold run on Saturday for the Third Annual Taos Turkey Trot. Maybe a little snow? Maybe a lot of snow? Maybe just snow in the mountains? I guess we won’t really know until Saturday. Dress properly for the weather and come out for a quick run to support “Get Fit Taos Kids” and the Taos Sports Alliance. We’ll be giving out prizes to the fastest turkeys and drawing bib numbers for many more prizes! Thank you to our sponsors. See you on Saturday!
G.O. H.A.R.D. (Globally Organized Hug A Runner Day) is celebrated in Portland and we thought – why not Taos?! This could be the single best day of the year.
Every runner deserves a hug. A real hug. The kind of hug that says, “Even if I don’t understand why you do it, I appreciate and recognize your effort.”
Check out Run the Edge to see how they do it in Portland. Then find a runner and share the love!

What is Get Fit Taos Kids?
– A comprehensive healthy eating and active living intervention program that provides education and treatment for obese children/youth and their families in Taos.
– Targets children 8 through 14 with high risk for health problems stemming from obesity
– A collaboration of pediatricians, nurse practitioners, fitness & swimming experts, nutritionist, diabetes counselors, Medicaid public health, Holy Cross Hospital, families and children in rural New Mexico
– The physical activity component of Get Fit Taos Kids is a six week, supervised exercise, swimming and nutritional training program that meets once a week after school
“The key to the success of this program is that we offer a variety of activities and formats to get kids excited about exercising,” said Aura Garver, co-founder of Get Fit Taos Kids and owner of Aura Fitness. “We ask kids who have completed the program to become mentors for the new kids, which serves to empower them and extends the time that they are active with us. Kids learn how important it is to make long term investment in their health now so they don’t have greater health issues as adults. This program teaches them to build a foundation of healthy lifelong habits.”
Childhood obesity is at an all time high – nearly quadrupling in 30 years. One-third of New Mexico’s five year olds were either overweight or obese in 2011.
What we see in clinics and patient rooms
High blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar in children in their first years of grade school
